"Medical marijuana advocates ask to make law permanent"

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Medical marijuana advocates ask legislators to permanently legalize medicinal marijuana in Rhode Island.

Advocates appeared at the House Committee on Health yesterday. They also asked legislators to expand the state's medical marijuana law.

Mike Oliver suffers from Crohn's disease. He told the committee that "medical marijuana has given me back my life."

Rhode Island became the 11th state to legalize marijuana for medical purposes in January 2006. The law will be repealed on June 30th if legislators don't take action.

The only speakers opposing the bill were the state police and a founder of Americans for Drug-Free Youth.

The committee hasn't taken any action yet.
