1. HOUSE&SENATE PASSED MEDICAL MARIJUANA ACT, ON TO GOVERNOR
- On May 2, the RI House of Representatives passed the 2007 Medical Marijuana Act by a vote of 50-12, and on May 23, they passed its Senate version 51-12. On May 3, the RI Senate approved the bill 28-5, and on May 30, they passed its House version 29-5.
- Now the Medical Marijuana Act is on the Governor's desk. He has 7 days to let it become law or veto it. Call Governor Carcieri's office at 401-222-2080 and ask to leave him a message: "Governor Carcieri, I live in Rhode Island, please do not veto the Medical Marijuana Act!" Or write to him today at: Gov. Donald Carcieri, State House Room 115, Providence, RI 02903.
- The 2005 Medical Marijuana Act was originally scheduled to expire on June 30, 2007. We hope that it will instead become permanent by that date. So, we're planning a fundraiser party to celebrate!
- How about a fundraiser on Saturday, July 7, 2007? Visit our website over the next month for details like price and location. Meanwhile, write back if you're interested in volunteering any of the following: music equipment, drinks, food...
- On May 3, the Providence Phoenix ran a great article, Who's afraid of medical marijuana? on RI patients. Also this month, editorials in favor of medical marijuana appeared in the Kent County Daily Times: Halfway doesn't count and the Providence Journal: For medical marijuana.
- On May 28, the Providence Journal printed a patient's letter-to-the-editor, Marijuana's pain relief was miraculous. On May 2, the Barrington Times published a letter, Medical Marijuana a blessing for me, and on May 1, the Woonsocket Call also ran a letter, Medical marijuana restores normal life to city man.
- At Brown University on Thursday, May 3, RIPAC held "Medical Marijuana: Research and Clinical Perspectives," a free Continuing Medical Education (CME) seminar. Physicians, nurses, and medical students attended, and physicians received 2.5 CME credits through RI Hospital.
- For more information on the 3 presenters, see http://RIpatients.org/medical/cme. Since this event was so well-received by so many members of the medical community, we hope to hold a sequel in the coming months!
- RIPAC regularly hosts a group of medical marijuana patients and caregivers to network, share information and stories, and provide mutual support--you are not alone!
- If you are a patient or caregiver, or know a patient or caregiver, who would be interested in meeting other patients, please contact RIPAC!
Have a healthy day,
