Guide to SECURITY CULTURE under the RI Medical Marijuana Act

  1. Common sense can prevent trouble
    1. Don’t discuss federally prohibited activities over phone or email
    2. Don’t buy or consume medical marijuana in public places or in plain view
    3. Don’t give police extra information about your or others’ activities
    4. Remember: “Loose lips sink ships”
  1. Stay within the law — don’t be a criminal
    1. A patient should never have over 12 mature plants, or 2.5 ounces (70 grams)
    2. A caregiver for 2-5 patients should have under 24 mature plants, or 5 ounces
    3. This law only applies if you have your ID card—keep your card with you!
      1. Contact Health Dept immediately if your card is lost or stolen,
      2. Or if your medical condition, name, address, or caregiver changes
    4. Don’t drive (car/plane/boat) under the influence.  This is prohibited.
    5. Don’t smoke on public transportation,
      1. or at a school,
      2. or at a jail or other correctional facility,
      3. or “in any licensed drug treatment facility,”
      4. or on public land or in any public place.
    6. If you grow your own medicine, it must be indoors! Not outdoors!
  1. Make your indoor garden as invisible as possible
    1. Never show, or tell anyone about, any garden. Don't discuss any garden by phone
    2. Pay bills with cash or money orders, especially for growing equipment
      1. When buying growing equipment, never mention marijuana
    3. Keep electrical use reasonable. Don’t steal electricity! It’s wrong, and increases your risk a lot!
    4. Securely lock your grow box/room and the house/site you’re growing at
    5. Curb noise by insulating room with sound board; muffles sounds like sheet rock
    6. Stop light leaks (windows, etc.). Tape heavy curtain to wall around edges
      1. Check for light leaks often by going outside to see if light’s visible
    7. Keep air clean near house; pungent odors lead to curious neighbors/trouble
      1. Air fresheners: cheap, assorted scents, and may be hung all over
      2. Incense/potpourri: cheap, stronger-scented, will mask smells well
      3. Simmering onions or garlic quickly covers scents very effectively
      4. Carbon filter attaches to your air extraction system and filters scent out of the air before it is exhausted from your grow room; is costly
      5. Ozone generators, “ozonators”: costly, produce ozone with UV light, require easy monthly cleaning, include ozone detection card
